Water Lipo® vs Traditional

Get the Facts – Water Lipo®

Traditional Liposuction

Water Lipo®

Pain Control Usually general anesthesia – gas, sometimes IV sedation. Local anesthetic (numbing)

Costs

Add facility and anesthesia costs Usually less

Risks

Much higher complication rate Tumescent technique with lowest rate of complications documented in the medical literature. Greatest patient satisfaction documented in the medical literature.

Expectations

Much less precise because of large instruments and sleeping patient Desired improvement with greater proven safety.

Bleeding

Significant blood loss

Transfusions can be required

Minimal blood loss. Patient usually loses more blood during a blood test than with these procedures

Pain

Significantly more. Requires immediate and prolonged use of pain killers. Often minimal because much less trauma caused to the body with water pressure than scraping at fat.

IV Fluid Needs

NOT a tumescent technique, misleading if stated so. Need IV Fluids to replace what is lost Tumescent technique replaces fluid in the patient in the form of the tumescent Solution. No extra IV fluids are neede

Recuperation

Usually double or triple that of tumescent Faster recuperation time, walk-in-walk-out surgery always done as an in-office procedure

Return to Work

Return to work in days to weeks Usually can return to work the next day depending on the treatment size *

Instruments

Larger instruments that crush and suck fat means more pain, bleeding and schance of skin irregularities and LOOSE SKI Gentle stream of water creates virtually zero bleeding and smooth results. Laser tightening during procedure further tightens skin.

Operative Suite

Usually hospitals; Sometimes surgical center; Less office based Almost always done in office. No hospitals or IVs required.

Anesthesia

General anesthesia or heavy ID sedations used Local numbing only. No IV sedation used

Why are the above comparisons so important? Most of the complications of liposuction in the press have been attributed to either a severe reaction to anesthesia or extreme blood loss, neither of which is a risk for Water Lipo® patients.

Advantages of Water Lipo®

There are many advantages to Water Lipo® using the tumescent technique.

First, the patient does not require general anesthesia, minimizing risks and avoiding the side effects such as nausea and prolonged recovery.

Second, because Water Lipo® relies on a stream of water to wash out fat uniformly instead of scraping with a cannula, results are more precise and smooth.

In addition, because the procedure is so gentle, less tumescent fluid is needed during the procedure which makes it so that the physician can see your results in real time rather than guessing what you will look like in 6 weeks *.

With the patient being awake this provides tremendous advantages to the liposuction surgeon. The patient has muscle tone and can flex and tighten certain muscles which makes targeted fat extraction easier.

Many people ask about what happens to the extra skin after fat has been extracted. The answer is that the water seems to create a contracting effect on the skin. In addition, in patients with more skin, Dr. Joffrey performs the Water Lipo® procedure with both the body jet cannulas and with laser liposuction to maximize skin retraction. This, along with the Skin Tyte™ treatment a few weeks after a liposuction procedure can have a positive skin tightening effect on the patient *.

Water Lipo® is also unique in that the vast majority of patients feel that they can go back to work the next day. That is not to say that some level of soreness is not to be expected for a few days, but patients usually require only over-the-counter pain relievers and have little trouble returning to work or school very quickly.

Water Lipo® is usually less costly than other methods of liposuction. Since the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia without IVs, there is no need for the surgeon to hire an anesthesiologist. In addition, the procedure is most often performed in the attending surgeon’s office, which is more cost-effective than booking a hospital operating room.

Water Lipo® at our practice

So how do our practice of Water Lipo® differ from the liposuction performed by other doctors in the Milwaukee metropolitan area?

  • We don’t use IV sedation or general anesthesia
  • Dr. Joffrey trademarked the Water Lipo® procedure that utilizes both the Body Jet cannulas AND laser liposuction to maximize your result.
  • We offer more than one single technology. We perform micro-cannular liposuction, laser liposuction, and Water Lipo®. Because of this, you will get what you need. Some offices will offer you only one technique and say it is superior because they only know one way of doing things or have only a single technology. Our doctor will give you options that you will not have at other offices.
  • We perform all liposuction procedures in the office.
  • Our surgeons are board certified.
  • We never had a patient suffer a severe complication from Water Lipo® or any other liposuction procedure.

Anyone who is considering an elective procedure should educate themselves on the different procedures available to them and the risks and costs involved. Before undergoing any procedure, Dr. Joffrey encourages you to get the facts and work with a professional that follows the guidelines of safe and effective cosmetic treatments.
